Mandates & Objectives

Chair

Selection – The candidate must be a present or recent past member of this Committee and should be a builder.  The Chair will be chosen by a nominating committee composed of Safety Committee representatives who will nominate representatives for consideration and vote by the committee at large.  Term - Two years, with an option to renew for an additional year at the invitation of the committee.

 

Purpose:

To provide advocacy, education and direction to the members of the Association that will reduce human suffering and financial costs associated with workplace incidents.  The committee is coordinated by the CHBA-Alberta and a volunteer Chairperson.  

 

The matrix is composed of representative(s) from each of the following organizations:

  • Local Home Builders’ Associations in Alberta (1 or 2)
  • CHBA - Alberta (1)
  • Alberta Construction Safety Association (1)
  • Alberta Worker’s Compensation Board (1)
  • Workplace Health & Safety (1)
  • Alberta Building Officials Association (1)

Responsibilities of the Committee members:

  • Attend the meetings and conference calls;
  • Accept responsibilities assigned by the Committee and complete them responsibly;
  • Report on the provincial Safety Committee issues back to their parent organization;
  • Bring forward issues of concern or items of interest from their parent organization;
  • Help to plan and implement actions that will advance safety in the residential construction sector.


Membership:

1.  Local Home Builders’ Association Representatives. 

Selection will be made by the local home builders’ associations in consultation with CHBA - Alberta.  The candidates must be drawn from people currently serving at local association level on their safety, technical or builder council or Board of Directors (if applicable).  Members should serve in a senior capacity with their company such as owner, general manager or safety manager and should have a strong understanding of the safety aspects of housing.


The term of membership in the provincial Safety Committee will be two years with an option to renew at the invitation of the committee and the agreement of the member.

 

2.  Strategic Partner Organizations

Selection – nominated by the organization.


Term – at the discretion of the organization in discussion with CHBA-Alberta.

 

3.  The provincial Safety Committee Chairperson

Selection – The candidate must be a present or recent past member of the provincial Safety Committee and must be a local Home Builders’ Association representative.  The Chairperson will be chosen by a nominating committee composed of the provincial Safety Committee representatives who will nominate representatives for consideration and vote by the committee at large.


Term- Two years, with an option to renew for an additional year at the invitation of the committee.  


Meetings take place quarterly or as required.  Sub-committees – as required.


Locations: One face-to-face meeting is held in Edmonton or Calgary.  Three other meetings are held in Edmonton with other local areas participating via conference calls.


Facilitation

Manager, Technical & Safety, for CHBA – Alberta provides administrative support and facilitation, including:

  • Setting up meetings,
  • Preparing agendas and circulating minutes,
  • Preparing draft budgets and financial reports,
  • Brining relevant information to the committee for discussion,
  • Establishing relations with key Government Departments,
  • Researching ways to move safety issues forward in the industry, and
  • Preparing reports to the Board of Directors of CHBA – Alberta,


Support

Meeting costs and travel for committee members and volunteers to attend CHBA – Alberta Safety Committee meetings will be administered by CHBA – Alberta.
