Setting the Plan
The CHBA – Alberta Management Team have prepared the association’s 2007 Business Plan, following a two-day strategic planning session in Canmore that was led by Dr. Al Coke of Virginia. Members of the CHBA – Alberta Board of Directors agreed on six strategic goals for the association, ranging from addressing the skilled labour shortage, to the image of the industry to energy efficient housing. The Business Plan will be reviewed by the Board on February 13 and then it will be shared with all CHBA – Alberta members. CHBA – Alberta Executive Officer Grant Ainsley calls the plan “a huge step forward” for the association. He says the plan’s results will be measurable and will show members where funding from the One Voice – One Industry initiative will be spent and what value members will receive. In a couple of weeks, the Board of Directors will approve the first annual CHBA - Alberta Business Plan. The cornerstones include efforts to curb the skilled labour shortage, making government relations efforts more effective and improve the image and professionalism of our industry. This wouldn’t be possible without this initiative. Details of the Strategic Plan/Business Plan will be communicated in the coming weeks.

Approved
The One Voice - One Industry initiative was unanimously at the 2006 CHBA -Alberta Annual General Meeting on September 22. Beginning January 1, 2007, members of CHBA - Alberta will now pay an added value charge to CHBA - Alberta. Builder members will pay $50 per permit and non-builder members will pay either $100, $200 or $300 depending on the size of its organization. 25% of the money will then be rebated back to the local associations.
This additional funding will be used to hire additional staff and provide them with the resources to address the issues facing our industry today and tomorrow. Throughout 2006, member companies have been champions of the initiative making voluntary contributions allowing the association to hire a Director of Government Relations as well as a Director of Human Resources Development. As communicated over the past year, great strides have already been made but it is just the beginning. In the coming weeks, expect more information from CHBA - Alberta on the approval of the initiative.
Deciding Our Own Future
In the
last ten years, the value of Alberta's housing industry has leapt from
$2.5 billion to over $11 billion. With this growth come significant issues
and challenges that impact our business today and more importantly threaten
the future of our industry. No longer can we survive as an effective association
at the local or provincial level with simply volunteers and a minimal
staff commitment . Our association needs to work cohesively to provide
the appropriate resources and strategies in order to effectively manage
these issues and ensure our vision "We Shape the Future of Housing for
Albertans" is a reality.
