One Voice - One Industry
One Voice - One Industry

The Foundation of CHBA-Alberta

In early 2007, our Board of Directors approved the first annual Business Plan for our association. The cornerstones include efforts to curb the skilled labour shortage, make government relations efforts more effective and improve the image and professionalism of our industry. This wouldn't be possible without OVOI. As an example, we are working diligently on the issue involving Property Sales Tax.  Executive Officer, Kathy Watson and a team of volunteers are making progress on building relationships with provincial government representatives to ensure our industry's voice is heard.

One Voice - One Industry was unanimously approved at the 2006 CHBA - Alberta Annual General Meeting on September 22.  Beginning January 1, 2007, members of CHBA - Alberta will now pay an added value charge to CHBA - Alberta.  Builder members will pay $50 per permit and non-builder members will pay either $100, $200 or $300 depending on the size of it's organization.  25% of the money will then be rebated back to the local associations.

This additional funding will be used to hire additional staff and provide them with the resources to address the issues facing our industry today and tomorrow.  Throughout 2006, member companies have been champions of the initiative making voluntary contributions allowing the associaton to hire a Director of Government Relations as well as a Director of Human Resources Development.  As communicated over the past year, great strides have already been made but it is just the beginning.

In the last ten years, the value of Alberta's housing industry has leapt from $2.5 billion to over $16 billion. With this growth come significant issues and challenges that impact our business today and more importantly threaten the future of our industry.

No longer can we survive as an effective association at the local or provincial level with simply volunteers and a minimal staff commitment . Our association needs to work cohesively to provide the appropriate resources and strategies in order to effectively manage these issues and ensure our vision "We Shape the Future of Housing for Albertans" is a reality.
