October 30 Deadline for Code Comments
The deadline for industry members to provide comments on the proposed 2010 National Building Code changes is October 30, 2009. The main issues affecting the residential construction industry pertain to climbable guardrails, protection of falls from windows, and radon gas. CHBA - Alberta strongly encourages members to visit the website and leave their feedback.
Safety Code Act Public Review
The Safety Codes Act (SCA) sets the rules on how municipalities, corporations, inspection agencies, the Safety Codes Council, contractors, industry and the public carry out the requirements of codes and standards in the areas of building, fire, plumbing, gas, electrical and others. Examples of what the SCA does would be; to determine how a municipality issues building permits, the certification of safety codes officers, how code interpretation disputes are resolved, the issuing of certificates of competency, and the enforcement of codes and standards. The SCA has not been comprehensively reviewed since coming into force in 1994, and so the provincial government is encouraging all industry members to participate in an online survey to give feedback and recommendations for change to the current SCA. The survey deadline is November 30th and can be accessed by clicking here.
Report on Vapor Barrier Performance
The National Research Council (NRC) recently published a report that investigates the role of the vapor barrier in exterior wood-frame stucco walls. For this purpose, the wall is subjected to the exterior weather conditions of six different North American geographic locations and three different interior climatic conditions. Seven different vapor diffusion strategies, generated by varying the water vapor performance of the vapor barrier, installed outboard of the interior finish, have been studied to generate critical understanding on the role of vapor barrier in the wood-frame stucco walls. The report can be downloaded by clicking here.
