A Lot on Their Mind
Lot availability and cost have been identified as the biggest concerns to Alberta home builders, nudging above the ever present skilled labour shortages. The somewhat surprising result is the outcome of the latest Pulse Survey, which was done for the national association in Ottawa. The same survey also provided some good news for renovators, as their business prospects are expected to remain solid.
General Members and OVOI
One Voice - One Industry annual invoices have been sent to all general members in the province. The funds collecte go towards more effective government relations, efforts to improve the shortage of skilled labour, along with improved professionalism and image of the industry. General association members are a big part of the industry and of the association's membership. Although they don't directly build and renovate homes, the more successful builders and renovators are, the better general members do as well. It is all part of the One Voice - One Industry philosophy. If you have received a letter and form, you are requested to list the number of employees in your company who are involved in some form of the residential construction industry and submit a payment for the appropriate amount to CHBA - Alberta. Alberta Budget
The Government of Alberta is looking for your advice regarding the 2008 Budget. Albertans have been asked by Premier Stelmach and Finance Minister Dr. Lyle Oberg to provide comment regarding priorities of Government spending.
CHBA-Alberta has been stressing with the province the importance of providing adequate provincial resources to build and maintain Municipal infrastructure.
Alberta Government has agreed to provide funding to compliment CHBA-Alberta resources for many skilled labour and post secondary initiatives which include program development, benchmarking, hiring foreign workers, collecting labour market information and much more. It is essential that support for skilled labour enhancement continues into coming years.

Professional Development Forum
Local and Provincial Home Builder Association Staff gathered last Friday for a productive professional development forum. The morning began with a session educating and updating local staff on One Voice - One Industry (OVOI). Great discussion ensued on invoicing, communication and the benefits members are expected to see as a result of OVOI. A session on member recruitment and retention allowed the group to share ideas and strategies, followed by effective brainstorming. The afternoon proceeded with a seminar led by Dennis Thomson, former Communications Manager for the City of Edmonton. Dennis focused the group on utilizing the media to elevate the image of the association and industry.
