Government Relations and Communications

In a regulated industry such as homebuilding, it is important to maintain a cordial and productive relationship with the decision-makers in government. For CHBA – Alberta, this means working with the Alberta government in a partnership to ensure the homebuilding industry and consumer are not adversely affected by new laws and regulations or changes to existing ones; as well as being a key resource for the government to rely on for information and support regarding CHBA’s area of expertise (homebuilding).

The overarching goal of government relations activity is the creation of a relationship where government officials in all areas think “homebuilding equals CHBA”. The organization will be their first call as a reliable source of information, a source of new policy ideas, and a partner in satisfying the consumer (who is also the voter). Creating this relationship requires the creation of political capital strategy, a clear and thorough communications strategy, further engagement of the members in a Building Industry Action Network to connect with MLAs locally, and action through an active Government Relations Committee.

This approach is an integral piece of the CHBA - Alberta Strategic Plan. Positive interaction with government will allow the association to achieve its broader strategic goals and bolster any communication and public relations efforts.

Key resources in the implementation of the government relations program will include the CHBA – Alberta Executive Officer, CHBA - Alberta Manager, Government Relations, Government Relations representatives from local Associations, the CHBA - Alberta President, and CHBA members-at-large at various levels.

All individuals taking part in the government relations strategy will be fully briefed through talking points on relevant issues, as developed by CHBA – Alberta so that the group is speaking in one voice and conveying a clear message to government. Any questions can be directed to the CHBA – Alberta office staff, who will be monitoring and reporting on issues as well as developing one-pagers to ensure messaging is concise.

CHBA personnel will be kept informed through periodic contact and a regular news piece, the Alberta Advocate, detailing government activity specifically affecting the home building industry and general political news.

Government relations activity addresses CHBA – Alberta’s strategic principles of relevancy and industry leadership, and supports all the strategic priorities of CHBA – Alberta this year and in the future.
