Step 1 Register for PIR and COR

Step 2 Course Completion
 
Have at least one full-time employee complete the following courses:
 

Principles of Health & Safety Management
A one-day course designed to help the company develop and implement a safety program
 
Auditor Training
A two-day course developed to assist the person responsible for health & safety understand how to measure the effectiveness of the company's program.
 
Leadership for Safety Excellence
A two-day course designed to help the supervisor understand their health & safety roles and responsibilities.
 
Train-the-Trainer Course
A one-day course in either Flagperson or Transportation of Dangerous Good (TDG) or Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS)
 
 
Time Investment: 6 Days               Cost: $320.00
 
 
 
Step 3 Site Assessment for Peer Audit
 
The five page Site Assessment for Peer Audit form (located in the COR Downloads section) must be filled out once the auditor has been certified. Fax completed form to (780) 455-1120 or 1-877-441-0440.

Arrangements for the audit, from the notification date, could take approximately four weeks to arrange based on auditor availability.
 
 
 
Step 4 External Peer Audit
 
The external peer* audit should take 2 - 3 working days (less for companies with fewer than 30 employees) depending on location of the active work sites in relation to the head office. Once the audit has been completed, the company must forward the audit document to the Alberta Construction Safety Association for review.

This review process should take less than 10 days to complete, barring any unforeseen errors and/or omissions in the audit.
 
* Companies in the Alberta Construction Safety Association peer audit process are required to reciprocate auditor days, equivalent to the number of days it took to complete their audit, within 180 days or pay the Alberta Construction Safety Association $600.00 (plus GST) per day. Travel, accommodation and misc. expenses not included.

If peer auditor days are not reciprocated the company's Certificate of Recognition will be revoked.

Companies who pay for external audits will not be required to perform peer audits.

Upon the completion of Step 4, the Alberta Construction Safety Association will forward a certification request to Alberta Human Resources and Employment, Workplace Health and Safety for issuance of the Certificate of Recognition.

This process could take up to four weeks to complete, barring any unforeseen errors and/or omissions in the audit.
     
Maintaining COR      

Certification is valid for three-years from the date of the external (peer) audit. Maintaining certification requires:

Internal audits submitted annually
 
Employment of a full time employee who has completed the required training
 
 
 
 
 
SECOR Small Employer Certification of Recognition

Step 2 Courses
 
The owner/manager must take the one-day Small Business Course on how to build a health & safety program (manual) called Small Employer Health and Safety Management.

The owner/manager must complete the Construction Safety Training System (CSTS) or the Roadbuilder's Safety TrainingSystem (RSTS) interactive computer-based program. It is recommended field employees also take this training.

The owner, manager or most senior field supervisor must be certified in standard First Aid (two-day course) and if he/she has more than one work crew, additional first aid training is required in line with the Alberta Occupational Health and Safety legislation. A list of approved First Aid Training Courses can be obtained online at www.chbaalberta.ca in the COR download section.

A copy of the First Aid certificate must be faxed to the Alberta Construction Safety Association (780-455-1120 or 1-877-441-0440) before your self-evaluation (Step 3) will be reviewed.
 
 
 
 
Step 3 Small Employer Audit
 
The company will have to complete the small employer self-evaluation validating the developed health & safety program (including completed documentation). This self-evaluation and supporting documentation as well as copy of the company's safety manual must be submitted to the Alberta Construction Safety Association for review.

Based on approval of the self-evaluations document and the company safety manual, certification will be requested.

Alberta Human Resources and Employment, Workplace Health and Safety will issue the Small Employer Certificate of Recognition.

This process could 4 - 6 weeks to complete, barring any unforeseen errors and/or omissions.

Maintaining COR

To maintain SECOR companies must:
 

Conduct an annual self-assessment of its health and safety program
 
Complete a self-evaluation and submit it to the Alberta Construction Safety Association for review
 
Ensure the Owner takes a minimum one-day refresher course every three years
 
 
When the number of workers exceeds 10, the company is no longer qualified to hold a SECOR and must take the necessary steps to obtain a standard COR.
